Rail project cancelled because of ‘affordability’ not technology
The driving reason behind the Government's decision to derail the planned electrification of the Midland Main Line was saving money and not the advent or claimed efficiency of bi-mode trains, an independent report has decided.
The National Audit Office has published its findings into the funding of rail projects and found "while the availability of alternative means of delivering passenger benefits was important, the major reason for cancellation was affordability".
