Entrepreneurship in Yorkshire: Asking for help

ENTREPRENEURS should seek advice and have the courage to recognise their weaknesses, according to experts.

A failure to capitalise on the wisdom of others and a desire to retain complete control are two of the main reasons for entrepreneurs getting into difficulties identified in a new supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com in partnership with Deloitte and Barclays Wealth.

The supplement, now available to download, looks at entrepreneurship and the opportunities and challenges faced by people looking to start new businesses.

Dan Renton, Deloitte’’s director in entrepreneurial business for Yorkshire, says: ““To build a family of trusted advisers can be really important and in many cases we do see successful businesses repay the early investment of advisers through continued loyalty as those same businesses grow up into larger enterprises.

““There is no doubt there is a strong correlation between successful businesses and the influence of a strong entrepreneur. But an important part of that entrepreneurial leadership is the ability to surround oneself with talent in recognition that no one person can do it all.””

Experts agree that there is a major difference between being an inventor and having an idea and the ability to turn that into a profitable business that characterises the true entrepreneur.

““Knowing if something is commercially viable –– most entrepreneurs with passion will develop and build that need,”” says Neil Manaley, director at Barclays Wealth.

““It’’s the tenacity –– you don’’t know how to do it but you are going to do it anyway.””
