Plans unveiled for major mixed-use student development near city centre

Plans have been submitted for a new student accommodation development in the inner city area of Leeds.

Student property developer Future Generation plans to build a mixed-use student development scheme along with ground floor management, common facilities, retail, commercial and leisure uses.

Situated off Mabgate, the complex will be known as Hope Foundry and provide 1218 student beds in 332 apartments and studios, spread across six blocks.

The site currently consists of old industrial buildings, which are mostly two-storeys and used as office, warehouse and storage units. The application notes that some buildings may need to be demolished.

The application states: “The proposed development will help to address the housing needs in Leeds; specifically the identified shortfall in student accommodation in the city centre.”

If council planners approve these plans, then it is expected that the scheme would be completed by September 2021.

The application also noted: “The proposal will bring forward the regeneration of this prominent site to created a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood.

”It will provide a high quality, innovative and sustainable development which enhances the historic environment and delivers new jobs, services and homes to meet the needs of a growing city and a new resident population.”
