Unravelling Red Tape: Businesses still constrained by access to finance and skills gap

THE regulatory burden is not the only factor constraining SME manufacturers in the West Midlands from growing. Many have said a lack of access to finance and the mounting skills gap remain serious challenges to their effectiveness.

Steve Brittan, president of the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group and himself head of a manufacturing business, said he had taken up both issues with Business Secretary Vince Cable during a recent meeting.

The skills agenda had received special prominence, he said.
