Birmingham’s tallest residential tower is about to get even higher

Plans to add an additional two storeys to the height of Birmingham’s tallest residential tower have been approved.

Regal (West Point) is nearing completion on the 31-storey block on the site bounded by Sheepcote Street, Broad Street and Oozells Way in the city centre.

As it stands, the tower will comprise 205 apartments including a ground floor restaurant, internal and external residential amenity space, associated hard and soft landscaping, infrastructure and engineering works.

The additional of two extra floors will enable the company to accommodate an additional 12 apartments, bring the total to 217. The extra apartments will be a mix of one and two bedrooms.

The remaining 205 apartments will comprise 86 one-bed, 118 two-bed and one three-bed apartments, with broadly seven apartments per floor, together with a ground floor restaurant.

Members of Birmingham’s planning committee said the tower was almost finished so the addition of the two extra storeys would have little overall impact on the structure.

Regal said the two storeys would effectively ‘crown’ the existing building and help to shield the roof-top plant, creating a better overall appearance.

To overcome a shortage of car parking facilities at the new development, the applicant is proposing to make a contribution to a car club, similar to that agreed at the Beorma residential scheme in Digbeth. The club would enable branded vehicles to park in special bays around the city.

Regal is also in talks with local car park operators to provide a number of long-term parking leases for the use of residents.
