Liverpool and Stockport enjoy strong Christmas

SHOPPING centre Liverpool One said Christmas sales were up 15% on last year.

There was also a strong performance throughout 2014 with a 7% increase, ahead of the national average of 1.6%, and footfall up 5% to 27.5 million.

More than 20 new brands opened during the year, including Michael Kors, a larger Zara, Cadenzza and 13 pop-up stores.

Meanwhile, commercial property agent GVA said Stockport’s Merseyway shopping centre had the busiest Christmas week for five years, with footfall up 3% to 222,000.

The busiest period was the week commencing December 15 when it was visited by 263,000 shoppers.

Liverpool ONE’s estate director Chris Bliss said: “2014 was a record-breaking year for Liverpool ONE with outstanding results from beginning to end. We experienced exceptional footfall at the start of the year with almost 10% growth in January and finished with our busiest Christmas period on record. Christmas week was followed quickly by a record-breaking Boxing Day. To top it off we significantly outperformed national retail spending and saw healthy footfall growth despite a backdrop of flat UK performance.”
