Selectric gets thumbs up for 196 homes

Electrical manufacturer Selectric has been given the green-light from Salford City Council to action its plans for developing 196 new homes on along Ordsall Lane.

The residencies – within easy reach of Manchester city centre – will be spread out across two distinctive blocks with the taller building reaching nine storeys, establishing an identity for the complex at the junction of Ordsall Lane, Worrall Street and Oldfield Road.

The lower building is set back at seven storeys and wraps around a ground-floor private courtyard with recreation space.

This scheme is architecturally-led by Manchester’s Fletcher-Rae which has worked alongside planning consultants, Euan Kellie Property Solutions.

Co-founder of Fletcher Rae, Andrew Rae, said: “It’s been a rigorous process leading up to this point, we’ve worked closely with the Urban Vision Planning Team to align our proposal with the overarching regeneration masterplan for Ordsall Lane.

“The new development will act as a catalyst for a new transit link between Manchester and Salford via Worrall Street, as well as encourage further development in an area that’s presently underused.”

With strong ties to Salford, Selectric is behind the city’s expansion plans that involve creating a new residential quarter alongside the river. The new scheme is also strategically being brought forward to fuel growth across Selectric’s core operations.

Legacy chairman Jack Ellis said: “Selectric has two manufacturing and distribution facilities; one is on the site that we’re set to redevelop and the other is nearby on Cow Lane.

“The apartments are acting as a business investment, supporting longevity business plans. We’re now looking for a new warehouse in Salford to co-locate the sites in order to operate more efficiently and increase production capacity.”
