Budget 2011: Manchester gets £85m for rail link

MANCHESTER will get an £85m link between its two main stations, Piccadilly and Victoria.

In his Budget Chancellor George Osborne confirmed his support for the scheme which could cut journey times between Liverpool and Leeds and assist economic growth.

It means the two stations will be linked by a new section of track at Ordsall in Salford.

It forms part of Network Rail's Northern Hub scheme, a programme of improvements the body says will increase the amount of train services in the North by 40%.
